Scary Hotel releases title track ahead of new EP

DAYTON, Ohio (SOUND VALLEY) - Scary Hotel is set to release "The Comfortable EP" July 2nd. Frontman, Mikey Chappell gives listeners a sneak peek into how the title track came to be!

What Is This Song About?

"This track is mostly about emerging from the haze of a past relationship and rediscovering yourself again. I often write about heartache, but have never really covered what comes after; clarity, hope, and the idea that broken hearts still beat just fine."

What Was Your Inspiration For This Song?

"One of my favorite things to do on weekends is to wake up early, put on a pot of coffee, and then go back to sleep while it brews. It was a Saturday in January of 2020 (before things started going south) and I was whistling what would become the main melody line when it started raining. I thought “how artsy of me would it be to write a song about this right now” and what was supposed to be a joke about living my “brooding artist” stereotype turned into this song."

What Do You Hope Listeners Will Get Out Of This Song?

"My hope with any song I write is that it connects with someone who has had the same experiences and makes them feel a little less alone. However, this is the track where I felt Scary Hotel coming into its own as a full band and not just my dear friends playing songs I wrote. Sean wrote his drum part, Curt wrote his bassline, and Logan found all the harmonies and wrote her keyboard parts. It’s a completely different energy, and it’s all very new and exciting and I’m hoping listeners feel that too."

Describe Your Writing Process. Did You Take A Different Approach?

"Lyrically, my usual writing style is to elaborate on specific moments and stretch them out over the course of 3 to 5 minutes. With this song, I wanted to create more of a narrative and stick with a more central theme, specifically growth and self acceptance. The lyrics in this song are basically outlining all the thoughts that went through my head on a random Saturday. Musically, this was an entirely different approach. What usually happens is I write a song, develop a general sense of how I want it to sound, then describe that to everyone and they work their magic. For this song,I sent out a voice memo of me playing the song on an acoustic guitar in my kitchen, and let them interpret it on their own. At our next practice, it took on a completely different life because everyone’s individual playing styles and ideas. It’s my new favorite way to write now."
